Norway’s Best Time (+ The COOLEST Places to See)

Norway's

It all depends on what you are looking for. The country is beautiful all year, but your experience will vary depending on where you are located, what activities you choose, and when you visit.

Norway is a large country with a variety of weather conditions and tourist hotspots. Norway’s summer brings long days, beautiful weather, vibrant scenes, and, unsurprisingly, higher prices.

November through January can bring intense snow and very limited sunlight — conditions that some travel bed may find difficult. Spring and fall offer lower accommodation costs, but you should double-check if you are able to do your favorite activities, as many are seasonal.

Norway during the Winter

Winter is a season that is often shrouded by darkness because of Norway’s northern geography. It brings with it a tranquil, winter-wonderland heaven feeling that is difficult to find in the more tourist-heavy months.

Remember that winter temperatures can drop to -40C/-40F. If you are above the Arctic Circle, there may be months when the sun does not rise.

Things to Do in Norway during Winter

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are one of the most amazing experiences in Norway. It is well worth the effort to see them. The Northern Lights can be seen from October to March, as darkness is an essential part of their viewing.

Not all of Norway is considered prime Aurora Borealis territory. You will have the best chance to see the lights if you travel bed as far North as Bodo. However, your chances of seeing them increase the further North you travel.

Snow activities

You’ll find the best time to go to Norway for a snowmobile or ski trip is late February and early March. These times are more sunny than December and January, and they also have the best snowfall.

Norway: Norway Visits Spring

The spring season in Norway is full of flowers, melting snow and seasonal waterfalls. April, May and June bring with them a feeling of renewal and freshness. But, spring in Norway can be unpredictable. Depending on where you are located, warmer weather may begin in February. In other areas, skiing will continue to be in full swing until April.

No matter where you are headed in Norway, make sure you check the forecast to know what to expect.

Cities

You can visit Oslo, Bergen or any other charming city in Norway. Activities are plentiful and accommodations are open at all times of the year.

Winter is a great time to visit cities, if you want to try out winter sports and save money on lodging. Summer has great weather and a more lively atmosphere.

If you want to have the best of both, I recommend that you visit Norway’s cities in the late spring. The crowds are smaller, the streets can be walked, the prices are reasonable, and the flowers will be in full bloom.

Sami Culture & Reindeer

Norway is home both wild and tame Reindeer. While you can find them all over the country you might also want to explore the Sami culture. Norway’s indigenous Sami people have Reindeer as part of their traditional culture.

This is why I recommend visiting Norway in the spring, when the days are getting longer and snow is still on ground for Reindeer sledding.

Reindeer, by the way, is also a national food, so be prepared to see it on the menu before getting too attached!

Norway Summer Vacation

Norway is best visited in the summer months of June, July and August. Be prepared for longer days and warmer temperatures. It is not uncommon for the temperature to reach 25C/77F. However, it can change quickly so make sure you have a light raincoat and warm layers. This season Norway is lively with tourists and locals.

Norway is a popular destination in summer, so book your accommodation well in advance.

Things to Do in Norway during Summer

Midsummer Eve

Each year, the Norwegians celebrate Sankthansaften (or Midsummer Eve) every June 23. You can expect to see many parties and bonfires.

Midnight Sun

The midnight sun, a natural phenomenon above the Arctic Circle that occurs between mid-July and late May, is like a prolonged sunset and sunrise. The sky is full of beautiful colors and you can fit in everything no matter what time it is.

Even in summer, it is possible for the nights to get colder than the Arctic Circle. Wear long, cozy pants and sweaters!

Polar Bears

A polar bear cruise is an excellent option if you are planning to travel high chair up to Svalbard in Northern Norway. These cruises are usually held from May to September and focus on seeing polar bears in their natural habitat.

You might also want to try dog sledding or glacier trekking while you are in Svalbard. Also, take the opportunity to explore the local culture in Longyearbyen or Barentsburg.

Norway Visits the Fall

With cooler temperatures and more colorful leaves, fall arrives in Norway from September. Tourism takes a dip in the Autumnal season. This means that prices tend to drop and sites are less crowded.

Norway’s harvest season is also in fall, so you can expect to see a lot more fresh, local food in this season.

The Fjords

Visit at least two fjords to see some of the most spectacular sights in Norway.

You can expect to see a lot of people in summer depending on the fjord you choose (Geirangerfjord being my favorite). If you want to see a fjord at its most beautiful, without crowds, I recommend going in the fall. There won’t be any snow, so you can still go kayaking and hiking.

Geirangerfjord, one of the longest and most deepest fjords of Norway, is located in the country’s southwestern region, approximately 350 km north from Bergen. This fjord is a popular one in Norway, due to its still water and the 2000-meter high mountains that tower above.

Visit the Lofoten Islands

Lofoten Islands are a popular tourist destination because of their fjords, local culture, and the best time to visit them. It all depends on what you want to see and do.

The Lofoten Islands offer a variety of cultural activities year-round. However, some main nature sites can prove dangerous or difficult to access in winter and prices can skyrocket in the summer. Fall is a great time of year to visit the Lofoten islands.

Kystriksveien (Coastal Route)

The Kystriksveien coastal route, which runs for 630 kilometers from Steinkjer to Bodo, is one of the most picturesque in the country. Drive in autumn to enjoy stunning views and a slight chill in the air.

The Coastal Museum Norveg, Torghatten Mountain and the Helgeland Bridge are some of the most visited stops along the route.

Oslo-Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen)

The Oslo-Bergen Railway, often referred to by rail enthusiasts as Europe’s most beautiful train journey, is a must-see for all railway travel high chair lovers. This 495-kilometer track connects two of Norway’s most significant cities. It will provide stunning views of fjords and traditional fishing villages as well as waterfalls.

It’s beautiful all year, but it’s something to see the fall colors pass by your window.
